The Ferrari 458 Italia’s Pininfarina design provides further evidence of the complete departure from the past that this new car hails. The Ferrari 458 Italia has a compact, aerodynamic shape, underscoring the concepts of simplicity, efficiency and lightness that inspired the project. As with every Ferrari, the car’s styling has been very heavily influenced by the requirements for aerodynamic efficiency, as can be seen from the downforce of 140 kg at 200km/h generated by the new model. The front features a single opening for the front grille and side air intakes, with aerodynamic sections and profiles designed to direct air to the coolant radiators and the new flat underbody. The nose also sports small aeroelastic winglets which generate downforce and, as speed rises, deform to reduce the section of the radiator inlets and cut drag.

Today is a good day. Today is your first look at the all-new mid-engined Ferrari, the 458 Italia.

It replaces the F430 and, judging by the numbers, it's going to be simply astonishing.

First, the engine: a new 4.5-litre direct injection V8 putting out – ready for this? – 562bhp. That’s 79bhp more than the current F430, and 52bhp more than the Scuderia.

We’d heard rumours that the F430 replacement might gain turbochargers, but the 458 Italia remains defiantly naturally aspirated – in fact, at 127bhp per litre, Ferrari says it manages the highest specific output of any naturally aspirated engine ever. It’ll rev all the way up to 9,000rpm too, making it the highest-revving Ferrari of all time.

Add in 398lb ft of torque at 6,000rpm – of which 80 per cent is available from 3,250rpm – and you’re looking at a deeply, deeply fast car.

202mph fast, in fact. And a 0-62mph time of ‘less than 3.4 seconds’. That is unbelievably quick: the F430 hits 62mph in four seconds flat, and even the Scud can only manage a three-point-six. In fact, it’s even faster than an Enzo.

It won’t just be a straight-line monster, either: integrated and remapped versions of the F430’s differential and traction control systems which give the 458 32 per cent more longitudinal acceleration out of corners than its predecessor.

Oh, and see those black winglets on the grille, just under the nose? They’re slightly elastic, and deform downwards at speed to generate downforce, improve aerodynamics and cut drag. The 458, says Ferrari, will generate 140kg of downforce at 124mph. On a track, obviously.

Ferrari has ditched the F430’s F1-derived gearbox in favour of a revised version of the California’s seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Like the rest of the 458, it’ll be blisteringly fast, nailing shifts even quicker than the Scud’s six-millisecond changes.

All of that, and we haven’t even talked about the looks. Which is where you lot come in. What do you reckon? A future classic?

Ferrari FXX

The Ferrari FXX is a race car developed as part of an unusual development program by automobile manufacturer Ferrari in Maranello, Italy. Production of the FXX began in 2005.

The car uses some technology developed from the Enzo and combines it with some all-new developments from Ferrari and some of the suppliers. However, the car is only a part of the overall program: customers pay £1.3 million ($2.5 million USD) but are only allowed to drive the car on special track days approved by Ferrari and after they drive the car they have to brief Ferrari on the car's performance. Michael Schumacher was given the last one (number 30) when he retired from Formula One racing at the end of 2006. Ferrari's sister company, Maserati, has developed a similar car, the MC12 Corsa.

Essentially an evolution of the Enzo, the FXX shares some components with its parent car, but significant portions are exclusive to the FXX.

The FXX's engine is based on the Enzo's but has been expanded to 6.3 L (6262 cc, 382.1 cu in) from 6 L (5988 cc, 365.4 cu in), and output has been boosted from 660 PS (651 hp/485.4 kW), as seen in the Enzo, to 812 PS (800.9 hp/597.2 kW) at 8,500 rpm.

The gearbox incorporates the latest developments from Ferrari's F1 program and has a shift time under 100 ms. The brake pads are upgraded compared to those on the Enzo. It does, however, retain the ceramic discs found on the Enzo.

The tires on the FXX are 19 inch slicks custom-developed for the car, though road-legal.

As with the Enzo, the seat and pedal configuration are custom fit to the user's exact measurements.

The FXX features a comprehensive data-monitoring and telemetry that not only allows the driver to improve performance, but also provides Ferrari technicians with valuable data to improve the FXX and future road-going Ferraris.

Ferrari F430 Spider

The F430 Spider is the convertible version based on the coupé. The 430 Spider is Ferrari's 21st roadgoing convertible. The Spider is - just like the coupé - quite similar in looks to the Ferrari 360.

Despite the car's mid-mounted engine Ferrari's engineers found a way of creating a hood that automatically folds away inside the engine bay, thus ensuring purity of line. The striptease from a closed top to an open-air convertible is a two-stage folding-action that has been dubbed "a stunning 20 second mechanical symphony". After a short to and fro, the entire top disappears into a closed storage area between the seating and the engine.

The interior of the Spider is identical to the coupé.

Ferrari is Gonna Launch F2008

It looks like Ferrari will be the first to show off their brand new cars for 2008 before any other team. Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen stated this week that the F2008 will be released the 6th of January. His story was than confirmed by Luca di Montezemolo and Jean Todt.

There’s a lot riding on the fortunes of the F2008, not the least of which is Ferrari’s ability to maintain its position as the constructor champion of F1. The new car will be an evolution of last season’s F2007 (pictured), which should be a good thing for the race team. With the vast rule changes set to take effect at the beginning of the upcoming season, having a car that capitalizes early could make all the difference.

After the Ferrari launch, Toyota will be the second team to unveil its new race car, with a launch date of January 10. BMW Sauber is next on January 14, followed by Honda on January 29, and Renault on January 31. The rest of the F1 field will give the public a first glimpse of the new hardware later in the new year. Only McLaren, which suffered through the spy scandal last season, has chosen to abstain from a public launch this time around.
